Overview

Creating a strong resume is an ongoing process, you spend weeks updating it and making multiple versions. To write a good resume, show the impact you brought, not the things you did.

Be prepared to answer questions about every point on your resume. If you mention that you improved the speed, performance, or efficiency of something, be ready to describe how you did it and how you measured it.

Be ready to answer questions about how you would improve something in your project, if needed, or what you would do differently in your next project. And why? Because it demonstrates that you are the kind of person who learns from mistakes.

Nobody cares about your task list. They want to know how you moved the needle, what kind of noticeable work you did, how you made the team/project/product/process better, and how impactful your work was. Focus on the things you truly impacted.
Check the requirements that are in job description. Think what things you have done, and map those to job requirements and company mission. 👈 This is important! My resume was selected because it highlighted the required skills and experience, and I also had extensive experience in the field. Research people on LinkedIn who hold similar positions at the company and review their job responsibilities. Then, adapt these responsibilities to reflect your own experience on your resume.
PERSONAL PROJECTS. All the projects you list must be related to company/project you apply.

If it is a bank/fintech company → it will be nice to show that you build:

Stock Portfolio Tracker: show that work with external APIs (e.g., a stock market data provider like Finnhub or Alpha Vantage) to fetch real-time data, perform calculations (profit/loss, portfolio value), and display it.

Your impact should be measurable. Numbers. Links. Artifacts. At the same time you should proof that these numbers are valid.

Non-MAANG advice for early-career engineer. It can be difficult to make a significant impact, so it is okay to mention the tasks you worked on, but focus on the challenges you faced, the decisions you made, and the value you added.

Formula for impact statements

Use: Accomplished X by implementing Y, which led to Z. Check ChatGPT/Gemini how.
Provide proof — links to projects, reports, or benchmarks.
Keep each experience description concise (3-4 bullet points).
Don’t overuse the tech stack you use in every sentence, just list briefly in the end.

Only add the things you are proud off. You have achievements, you won scholarship or competition? Compare. Tell how many people participated, how many won, show the proof, upload certificate somewhere then map it to you resume. Only if that makes sense, don’t list if it is a small scale achievements.
If you have an open-source framework or library, then add it. This is what makes you different. This is what you should be proud of. Share your repository from GitHub; if you have 20–30 stars, that is even better. If you do not have such a contribution, then work on creating one. Make something useful for others, for developers, for the community.
Essential sections to include in resume

Skills – concise summary of your technical expertise. Don’t overuse tech names.
Experience
Projects – Include if you have notable projects. Provide artifacts such as links, GitHub repositories, or documentation.
Achievements – List only technology-related awards, hackathons, and coding competitions. Provide verifiable artifacts, such as certificates (upload and share the link) or relevant news/articles.
Education

Don’t list fake companies as your experience. At MAANG, after you pass interviews, your data will be manually checked from each company. You need to provide proof that you studied or worked somewhere.

But in case the business is closed, add 'Business ceased operations’.

One-page resume rule: No idea how effective it is. My resume is 2 pages. I applied through the Google’s career site. I received a reply after 3 days.

But it is better to keep a resume 1 page, if you have less than 5 years of experience.

It is not good if you switch company every 1 year. Combine such experience into one section.

Basics

✅ Use Overleaf to create a resume.
✅ Use only 1 page for your resume. To maximize space on your resume, rather than using header or footers, reduce the margins of the page.
✅ Easy to read the page. Page with good formatting - good font, font size. Clearly separated sections.
✅ Professional font, consistent spacing, clear section headings, no images.
✅ Ensure grammar and punctuation. Every sentence should end with a period. If you don’t care about grammar in your resume, then you have the same approach in your work. People will not work with you.
✅ Use action verbs: Designed, optimized, led, automated, implemented, refactored.
✅ Showcase leadership and impact: If you mentored or led project, highlight it.
✅ Use past tense: Maintain consistency in verb tense.
✅ Link your work: Add GitHub, portfolio, blog, or LinkedIn for extra credibility.
❌ No photos! They are unnecessary and can introduce bias.
❌ Only PDF format. Never DOCX.
❌ Avoid buzzwords: Focus on real skills and impact instead of vague terms like “hard-working”.
❌ Do not list all your achievements just to showcase a greater quantity without filtering. Highlighting a few of your best achievements is better than including many "average" achievements in your resume

Why my resume was selected?

When I talked with my recruiter, she mentioned that I had all the necessary skills and experience required for the position but also had significant experience even during university. So, using keywords from the job description is absolutely useful. Overall, create a resume that is easy to read and includes the keywords required for the position. But don’t be very fancy.

How do I describe the experience in a template?

It is not the best section of my resume, but it can be used as a reference.

In the first bullet point: I show what I did and how useful my work was—what I accomplished. But I could add numbers. I reduced manual testing, but how did I measure it? Did I accelerate testing speed? From what, to what?
In the second: I tell how, by implementing what?
In the third: I show the metrics. To what result did my work lead? → Identifying bugs faster (it would be better to show how many bugs were found monthly compared to the manual testing team) AND getting faster quality feedback about the product.

Overall, it looks like: “Accomplished X by implementing Y, which led to Z.”

How to Apply? When?

With referral. You can ask me or other person who works at Google. How to ask a referral?
Or without referral. Apply directly in careers.google.com.

How did I apply?

I applied through the careers site, without any referral, and got a response from the recruiter after 3 days. I just selected 3 positions I liked and applied. Every month, I apply to different FAANG companies – Google has always been my dream company.

Advice: So, start applying now, apply every month, and continue algorithms problem solving.

Moreover, focus on the locations where you apply. I recommend Munich, London, and Zurich, then prioritize Poland.

Last Words

In the end, even if your resume is super cool, you might get a rejection not because of your resume or because you're not the right person The position isn't closed until someone signs an offer. There may be people who are already at the last stage and signed an offer, so company close the job and send rejections to everyone automatically.

There are might be tons of other reasons.

It is luck to some extend.

But you have to be ready always to an interview, so you don't miss the opportunity when you have it.
